Going Beyond The Headline, Tackling Tough Topics

Blog, Documentaries, Featured
As a journalist, I love to tell stories. As a documentary film producer, I want to explore tough topics. As a dad, I'll do anything to protect my children and give them a healthy, happy life. When a project comes along that offers all three, it's no coincidence. I believe it's meant to be. Two years ago, Mickle Communications took on the topic of teen depression and suicide. We decided to bring awareness after a rash of suicides in our community. Some hit close to home. Two girls from our school district committed suicide within one month of each other. One was a recent graduate who had just begun her college education. The other was a 12 year old child. As a journalist, I wanted to tell the story of those…

At Mickle Communications we're committed to help find a solution and our documentary "If You Only Knew, The Journey Through Teen Depression and Suicide."  is an in-depth look at an epidemic sweeping through high schools across America. Tackling Human Trafficking

Blog, Documentaries, Featured
I always knew I wanted to produce a documentary.  I never dreamed we’d delve into such a dark, torturious, sadistic world.  The conversation began with a friend of mine who works in law enforcement.   As we talked about our careers, the good, the bad and the ugly, I shared with him my plans to do a documentary.  He asked if I’d ever considered exploring the issue of human trafficking. At the time, I had no idea that it even existed in the U.S. let alone so close to home. For the past three years, we’ve been investigating the kidnapping of children, who are then sold into slavery.  We traveled back to my home state of Oklahoma.  We also spent time in Kansas, Missouri and worked with survivors and law enforcement…

An Emmy Award Would Be Great But Sharing The Message Matters

An Emmy Award Would Be Great But Sharing The Message Matters

Blog, Documentaries, Featured
https://vimeo.com/156012850 Sometimes the award or even the nomination you hope for isn’t the biggest prize. With 30 plus years as a broadcast journalist under my belt, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be nominated for an Emmy.  It finally happened this week. Our documentary, “If You Only Knew: The Journey Through Teen Depression and Suicide” got the nod from the Mid-America Emmy Association.  Did it feel good to be recognized for our work?  Absolutely.  However, there was something much bigger at play here.  Getting the nomination means the conversation about teen depression and suicide will continue.  Hopefully, more people will realize we need to talk with our children about their emotional health.  Maybe, we can remove the stigma of depression.  That’s the “real” win here.  Whether we…

Mickle Communications Travels To Peru

Blog, Documentaries, Featured
Sometimes a story becomes so big, it’s almost impossible to tell. That is almost the case for what our team witnessed in Peru over the past ten days. What do you say to a mom who had to decide to sell some of her children because she couldn’t afford to feed all of them?  How does a parent decide what child will be forced into sex slavery or sold as slave labor?  How do you sit with a man who willingly admits he’s buying the children and has no compassion for them at all? Lastly, how do you encourage the kids who, so far, have managed to escape? Mickle Communications is the only video production company to send a crew to Peru to capture this gut-wrenching story.  Harry Walker has…
