How Using Snapchat Can Help Your Business

Social media is viewed and used by people on a daily basis. Over the last 10 years, social media applications like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become easily accessible to anyone with a smartphone or tablet. These social media applications have become great platforms for major businesses to advertise and connect with customers and clients. In September of 2011 the social media application Snapchat was launched and soon became very popular.

According to the website Social Media Examiner, as of February 2017, Snapchat had 158 million users, with the average number of snaps per day at 2.5 billion. 45% of the daily active users live in North America. Many Snapchat users are young people between the ages of 18 to 35, but as time goes on, the statistics show that the range keeps getting larger.

Snapchat is a social media application that allows users to send and receive videos and pictures instantly to whoever they are friends with on Snapchat. The content that is sent quickly disappears after it is viewed.

One of the key aspects to using Snapchat for businesses, is the fact that you can show things in real time, and give your audience a live view at events. Major sports leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLB have started using Snapchat to give the audience a live look in at games and events. The NFL uses Snapchat in a variety of ways by giving the audience a live look in at things like the NFL Draft, The Pro Bowl, and every game that is played each week. Certain events and award shows like the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the Grammys and the Oscars are now being shown on Snapchat through different users’ live snaps. What makes using Snapchat so unique is that it can take the audience behind the scenes. For example, at the Oscars this year there were many snaps of the host Jimmy Kimmel showing how he got prepared to host the event. The snaps showed things like his dressing room, his makeup procedure, and his take on how he felt about hosting the event.

If you have a business that is not performance-related you might be wondering how you would capture important aspects of your business through live video feed. Many brands like Frito-Lay, Gatorade, and Under Armour are now using the app for advertising. An ad for a new type of Frito-Lay chip is constantly popping up on my Snapchat timeline. One of the great things about these advertisements is that they last no longer than 10 seconds. It is a very quick and easy way for people to see your product. Snapchat is also used to help reveal new and exciting content that a business will be released.
According to an article on Social Media Examiner, McDonald’s once posted a snap with a message written out in French fries that said “stay tuned”. This message was in reference to the new bacon clubhouse sandwich they would soon be releasing. Doing things like this on Snapchat gives the viewers an idea that something new is coming to McDonald’s and it creates a level of anticipation for its customers.

Snapchat also gives the opportunity for companies to share promotional codes and coupons. A frozen yogurt chain called 16 Handles promoted store locations to attract customers. Whenever someone made a purchase from one of those locations, they would then have to snap a picture of themselves at that location. They would soon after receive a snap of a promotional code that gave them between 16% and 100% off of their next purchase.

Since people are constantly on their smartphones and Snapchat continues to gain more users, the amount of businesses that use Snapchat will continue to grow. It is very possible that businesses will continue to come up with new ideas on how to promote their products through snapchat.
